Evaluating the Logistics Structures of Tafel NRW
Strategy
Under the motto “Saving food. Helping people.”, the Tafel organizations in North Rhine-Westphalia provide surplus, high-quality food to over 500,000 people living in poverty. The state association, Tafel Nordrhein-Westfalen e. V., based in Neuss, represents and supports more than 173 local Tafel branches with over 500 distribution points. Around 12,000 volunteers work on-site – from collecting donations to distributing food. To ensure this vital support continues, the logistics infrastructure must be reliable, efficient, and digitally future-ready.
The Assignment
On behalf of Tafel Nordrhein-Westfalen – and in cooperation with the Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Affairs of North Rhine-Westphalia – we supported a structured process to further develop the organization’s donation logistics. The objective was to identify key logistical challenges and opportunities for digital transformation, incorporate local Tafel perspectives, and develop actionable recommendations for the future. The results were presented to both the state board of Tafel NRW and the national board of Tafel Deutschland.
Our Approach
1. Data Collection & Logistics Analysis
Systematic collection and evaluation of relevant logistical structures and challenges – both at the level of Tafel NRW and based on national logistics data.
2. Regional Consultations & On-Site Participation
Facilitation of multiple regional consultation events with representatives from local Tafeln to gather insights, challenges, and practical needs from the field.
3. Development of Strategic Recommendations
Combined findings from data and stakeholder input were translated into actionable recommendations for improving efficiency, advancing digital capabilities, and strengthening the logistics infrastructure.
4. Presentation & Strategic Integration
The results were presented to the state board of Tafel NRW and the national board of Tafel Deutschland as a foundation for further strategic implementation.
