Developing a Materiality Analysis
Sustainability
A robust materiality analysis is a strategic compass for targeted, impactful action.
The Assignment
Together with a mid-sized industrial company, we developed a materiality analysis to identify and prioritize sustainability topics. The goal: to define the key areas of action for a long-term ESG strategy, incorporating both internal and external viewpoints.
Our Approach
1. Analysis & Preparation
Review of existing sustainability initiatives and reports. Development of an evaluation framework based on ESG standards (GRI, CSRD, SDGs).
2. Capturing Stakeholder Perspectives
Qualitative interviews with internal stakeholders and a standardized external stakeholder survey to assess topic relevance.
3. Prioritization & Visualization
Synthesis of results in a two-dimensional materiality matrix (external vs. internal view). Prioritization workshops to define focus topics.
4. Integration & Strategy Development
Integration of prioritized topics into the sustainability strategy. Recommendations for internal communication and governance structures.
The Result
The company received a clear overview of its 12 most material sustainability topics, mapped within the industry context. The materiality matrix now guides strategic decisions, reporting, and internal governance. The participatory process significantly boosted internal buy-in for sustainability.
